While today’s high-end laptops have the processing prowess and graphical grunt to shame most desktop PCs, even the best road warriors can’t compete when it comes to audio fidelity. It’s the nature of the slim-lined beast, with most manufacturers unwilling to integrate the larger sized speakers necessary for Hi-Fi sound, instead using tiny two-dollar speakers. ASUS looks set to buck this trend, with the launch of its SonicMaster brand.

Derek Chang, of ASUS’s Taiwanese Technical Marketing department, visited Sydney’s Trackdown Scoring Stage, a professional sound recording facility, for the Australian (australia asus laptop battery)unveiling of SonicMaster-equipped laptops. According to Mr Chang, ASUS research found that the average computer user spends over nine hours each day doing activities that involved audio in some way. Given we spend so much time using our ears, it was only natural that the company would eventually focus on fixing the sub-standard audio quality of today’s laptops.

ASUS created its own internal working group to solve the issue, with the ASUS Golden Ear Team including many members with over twenty years of audio experience. This team partnered with ICEPower, an R&D branch of the premium audio supplier Bang & Olufsen, which specialises in external consultation to deliver high quality audio products (past clients include Audi and Samsung). This team identified three major areas where notebook audio suffered, the first being the static noise many laptop sound solutions are plagued by. To remove this hissing sound, ICEPower created a new high fidelity codec to lower signal noise, using a technique known as balance signal analysis. It seems to have worked, with the demonstration units at the event delivering crystal clear playback with absolutely no white noise.

The second area of improvement is low volume, which has been rectified with the use of stronger integrated amplifiers, running at 3W, combined with 25mm transducers. Listening to the high end NX90JQ notebook at the event, the volume was at least double that of most notebooks; not enough to have the neighbours complaining but more than adequate for watching a movie from a few metres away.

The third and final issue targeted by SonicMaster is the lacklustre bass found on today’s laptops. The solution is to include 80cc speaker chambers, four times the size of standard laptop speakers. Not only does this assist with better bass, it provides a wider frequency range across the entire audio spectrum.  Don’t expect the foundations of your home to be challenged but the bass displayed on the demonstration unit was far superior to anything we’ve heard before on a laptop.

We should point out that all of our listening tests at the event were conducted with the high-end NX90JQ laptop, which has the new 80cc speaker chamber strapped to either side of the large display. This 18.4″ multimedia behemoth has plenty of room for such imposing speakers. However, SonicMaster technology is rolling out across the entire N series of ASUS laptops, which ranges down to a more petite 14″ model. Obviously these smaller notebooks don’t have room for the 80cc speakers, so it’ll be interesting to hear how they sound. They do include the more powerful amplifier and new codec though, so we anticipate a higher audio quality than the scratchy noise that passes for audio on most of today’s laptops.

After an hour of listening to the NX90JQ, it’s apparent that ASUS has set a new benchmark for integrated laptop audio quality. While SonicMaster doesn’t quite match the precision or volume offered by set of dedicated speakers or headphones, it’s easily the closest match we’ve heard. And considering you don’t need to worry about packing in another device to make the most of this audio quality, it’s definitely the more convenient option. We look forward to testing some of the other SonicMaster sound solutions in the very near future – keep your ears open for our upcoming review.

During the global conference, Acer president and CEO Gianfranco Lanci demonstrated the Acer LumiRead, an Android-powered eBook reader.

In related news, Acer has signed an alliance with the Founder Group in an aggressive attempt to enhance and expand its ITC business in China.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed during the Acer Source Home 2010 conference last May, the two parties intend to work together on planning, development, and design of Founder brand products, including notebooks, netbooks, and e-readers.

The character resides with their widower father (voiced by Liam Neeson) until, one day, the player awakes to discover that the father has vacated the vault and journeyed into the wasteland for an unknown reason. The vault overseer becomes suspicious that the player is the cause of the father’s disappearance, so the player decides to travel into the wasteland in search of their father. The player will run into organizations from previous games such as the Brotherhood of Steel (a group of tech coveting survivors), and the Enclave – an elitist and genocidal group from the United States Government.

Far Cry 2 (GameGuideDog.com has the walkthrough guide): Far Cry 2 is a first-person shooter game designed originally for Windows, but will be available on October 21, 2008 for PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation platforms. The game no longer entails the science fiction aspects of its predecessor; in fact, the setting is realistic. The game takes place in a small, imaginary, central-African nation that is in a state of civil war. The protagonist of the games in the past, Jack Carver is not featured in this game. In the sequel, the player will have an option of choosing nine different characters for play. Each character has its own unique look and story. All of the characters will be different types of mercenaries. Any playable character not chosen will become a non-player character throughout the game. The plot of the game is centered on the recent collapse of the nation’s government which leaves two factions trying to gain control. The United Front Liberation and Labor, and the Alliance for Popular Resistance are at war with one another. Both groups claim to have the interest of the people at heart but are both obviously corrupt. It is then revealed that the diamond minds have been completely depleted, leaving the people with nothing, causing even more drama amongst the people of the country. The player must find and liquidate “The Jackal” an arms dealer that has been selling weapons to both sides of the conflict. This goal is to be accomplished by any means necessary.

5. Gears of War 2 (GameGuideDog.com has the walkthrough guide): – Gears of War 2 is a third-person shooter game developed exclusively for the Xbox 360. At the end of the first game, there was a Lightmass Bomb; Gears of War 2 takes place six months after its detonation. The majority of the Locust Horde was destroyed. In addition, the explosion caused the majority of the liquid Imulsion underground to vaporize thus causing a fatal disease deemed “Rust Lung”, which spread among the already diminishing human population. Following months of piece, Tollen and Montevado (two cities) disappear underground, thus causing the COG to believe the Locust has resurged. The players responsibility is to save the Jacinto Plateau, one of the only remaining safe harbors for humans, to do this one must take on a war with the Locust.

Lego Batman is Traveller’s Tales fifth shot at a Lego Game, and though the game should be perfected, it most definitely is not. It is still quirky. The puzzles don’t make sense, and it is still difficult to judge your jumps. Lego Batman is unique, however, because the story is not based off of a movie, or a comic book plot. The tale is basic- villains escape Arkham Asylum and Batman is responsible for hunting them down. Basically the whole point is breaking things, fighting, and getting rid of the bad guys. Throughout the games, you’ll have an opportunity to play in a vast array of scenarios and encounter a ton of characters. It’s a great simple mix, and a really fun, simple game to play.

Isaac is then separated and must battle his way to safety.

10. Guitar Hero World Tour (Activision; Release date: October 26, 2008) – This is the fourth game in the Guitar Hero sequence and should be available for Wii, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, and the Xbox 360. The game will continue to feature the guitar shaped controller, but will now be equipped with drum and microphone controllers for the percussion and vocal parts. This version of the game will allow users to create their own songs, not just perform the ones available on the game.

11. Left 4 Dead (GameGuideDog.com has the walkthrough guide):  – The goal of Left 4 Dead is an easy one – all you have to do is survive. You are lucky enough to be one of the few survivors of a new and highly dangerous strain of the rabies virus that has spread over the entire human population. It turns all humans into rabid and bloodthirsty zombies. Team work is necessary if you want to finish the game alive. Left 4 Dead is a first person multiplayer co-op survival horror shooter. It pits four human survivors against 4 human controlled characters. The game is available for the Xbox 360 or your PC.

It is a game about a runner, whose parents were murdered while protesting the government. Her name is Faith and she has to aid her sister in escaping from the corrupt government. Faith was taught that it is important to not utilize or rely on current communication methods because they are monitored by the police and government. She is forced to run messages to the criminal underworld in an attempt to rescue her sister. She is pursued and chased by government agents. The game play is realistic, and the graphics from the trailer look great.

13. NHL 2K9 (2K Sports; Already released)- 2K Sports really did a great job with the completely rebuilt NHL experience. NHL 2K9 offers a new in-game presentation system, new player animations and controls. You’ll be pleased with the new commentary, and even more user friendly controls. It makes playing the game on your Wii, Xbox 360, or Playstation 3 even better than it was before.

14. Prince of Persia (Ubisoft; Release date: December 2, 2008)- Just in time for Christmas, Prince of Persia will be released for play on your PC. The game starts off with a new Prince of Persia. He is returning home from his travels and adventures on a donkey that is full of treasure earned over time. He wants to spend his treasure on women and liquor and any other luxury possible. Unfortunately, he is caught in a fierce sandstorm. After the sandstorm dies down, he finds that he is in a mythical garden, and at its center there exists a Tree of Life. The Prince and a girl stumble upon one another and stuck in the same scenario make a decision to aid one another. Together the venture to the center of the garden, where they watch the trees destruction, thus leading to the liberation of Ahriman, the ancient god of darkness. After Ahriman is set free, he begins covering the lands with evil and darkness. The Prince and Elkia fight against Ahriman in an attempt to make the world good again.

15. Resistance 2 (GameGuideDog.com has the walkthrough guide) : Designed exclusively for the Playstation 3, Resistance 2 is an alternative history first person shooter video game. Resistance 2 is a continuation of the Resistance: Fall of Man story line. The game picks up at the end of Resistance Fall of man, and takes place just outside of London, England. It begins with hale walking through a field covered in snow; he is armed with only one grenade. A VTOL Aircraft sees Hale and then transports him to the Dan Aric Johnson Air force Base in Iceland. When the VTOL lands the U.S. Black Ops Soldiers try to subdue Hale. When Hale arrives at the base he finds he is not alone, he has been collected with other men who are resistant to the Chimeran Virus. They are called Sentinels and are a highly trained task force. Now he must fight a war against the Chimera.

Tawain’s computer maker Acer has released its new line of “Liquid” smartphones at a most opportune time.  With the Snapdragon HTC HD2 coming out later this year and the Sony XPERIA X10 hitting the markets first quarter of the next year, the new Acer Liquid A1 comes out pretty much bagging a couple of firsts. It’s the world’s first Snapdragon Android smartphone and the world’s first Android smartphone in the wide –VGA screen resolution.

Android fans may be a bit disappointed that Acer has underclocked the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon from 1GHz to 768 MHz.  That’s like getting a Ferrari to run only at 80 mph max. But it doesn’t look like this has compromised any of the remarkable features of the Liquid handset. It still packs a winning combination of innovative cutting-edge features and stylish 21st century ergonomics.

Another disappointment comes from Acer’s use of the older Android 1.6 when the latest and more powerful Android 2.0 is already out months before its release. But we can surmise that any shift could have delayed the Liquid’s launch date.  We only hope that Acer provides an upgrade option to prospective users of the Liquid smartphone.

Value for the Money

The handset has been available for pre-order on the Clove site in the UK.  It was initially promoted at a very affordable price of €380 ($570) before taxes and subsidies.  But it can now be had for slightly lower at the ?330 ($540) price point.  This is a landmark price for an upscale Android phone.  Firstly it’s a quad band GSM and tri-band 3G with HSUPA/HSDPA for high speed internet surfing. Whereas pother smartphones can only allow data synching between your handset and your laptop or desktop PC, the Liquid can also synchronized over WiFi 802.11 b/g apart from its hotspot surfing support.

Multimedia functionality gets upscale treatment starting with its expansive 3.5” TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen in Wide-VGA resolution. Movie watching on the road rarely gets this satisfying.  Then there’s a 5 megapixel camera with software-assisted accelerated autofocus, VGA video recording and geo-tagging from its built-in GPS receiver.  You also get A2DP support for wireless stereo Bluetooth earphones in addition to a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired headphones.

Your media content benefits from its 256MB ROM and a 512MB RAM with microSD support for up to 32 GB. Its slim 1350 mAh lithium-ion battery delivers 5 hours of talk time and 400 hours of standby time on a single charge – a bit on the short side.  It looks like Acer engineers may have underclocked the Snapdragon to be able to get the most of its slim underpowered battery which is the bane of most slim handsets.

Software wise, the Acer Liquid A1 has a full complement of phone apps that allow seamless integration with online social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Picasa and Flickr. You can now have updates and sync of your phonebook and calendar event with these social media and make use of Picasa and YouTube as a remote back-up site for all your media-rich files.   It has what Acer uniquely calls Spinlets, or apps that allow free audio and video streaming on your handsets that you can share with friends and colleague over the web and email.

For its price tag, it looks like Acer has hit on a winner with it Liquid smartphone.  We hope to see this widely available from network carriers soon.
